Hunter Pinke, ’21, is a North Dakota native, a UND graduate and former captain of the Fighting Hawks Football team. On December 27, 2019, Hunter was in a skiing accident in Keystone, Colorado. He suffered a complete spinal cord injury and a broken back, leaving him currently paralyzed from his chest down. After a time of rehabilitation in Colorado, Hunter returned to UND to continue his education. Hunter graduated from UND with a mechanical engineering degree in the spring of 2021. He is enrolled in the University of Arizona Masters of Architecture program and will compete for the Wildcats on the adaptive track & field and road racing team.

ON AND OFF THE FIELD
A four-year letter winner, Hunter played tight end and special teams for the Fighting Hawks, appearing in 34 games. Among many honors Hunter received following his accident, Hunter was named a captain of the Fighting Hawks Football team for the 2020-2021 season, a decision voted on by his teammates.

Hunter’s influence goes beyond the football field as a leader of UND’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and in the community, dedicating 170 hours of community service while maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. In 2020, Hunter was named UND’s Male Unsung Hero and the Grand Forks Herald’s Person of the Year. In 2021, he received the national Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award for overcoming odds to achieve success.

RAISING UP LEADERS
In honor of Hunter, his family, in partnership with UND Alumni Association & Foundation and UND Football, have established the Hunter J. Pinke Leadership Football Endowment. The endowment will support scholarships for UND Football players who have exhibited a similar attitude, speech and actions displayed by Hunter.

“The UND Football Program developed me as a football player, but more importantly as a person. The discipline, commitment, and selflessness that were instilled in me are characteristics that I will carry with me forever.”
