The Gene and Karolyn Roebuck Athletic Scholarship Endowment

A Legacy of Impact: The Roebuck Athletic Scholarship

With over 700 wins to his credit, Gene Roebuck left the University of North Dakota as its most decorated coach. In 25 years, Roebuck transformed the UND program into a national powerhouse that generated 13 conference titles (11 NCC, 2 GWC), 21 postseason appearances (20 NCAA, 1 WBI) and three national titles (NCAA DII).

Roebuck was hired as the University of North Dakota's women's basketball coach in June 1987. During Roebuck's tenure, UND went 628-145 and captured NCAA D-II National Championships in 1997, 1998, and 1999.

He produced the WBCA Player of the Year four times and guided eight NCC MVPs and one Great West Player of the Year. In addition, 19 players were named All-America, 52 players were named All-NCC, and seven were named All-GWC. During his tenure, he mentored 39 Academic All-Conference players. Three of his student-athletes would go on to earn NCAA postgraduate scholarships. His teams consistently were among the top teams in the country in cumulative grade point average, finishing in the top 25 seven times overall, including each of his final five years. Eight student-athletes earned Verizon Academic All-District VII First Team accolades and five would be named Academic All-America.

Roebuck's daughter, Cierra, also made a mark at UND. From 2005-07, she played basketball under her father, served as student assistant from 2007-09, and threw javelin for UND's track and field team and lettered in 2006-07. Cierra graduated from UND with a Bachelor of Science in Education, special education minor and kindergarten endorsement.

Coach Roebuck retired from UND in 2012. His distinguished career finished with an overall record of 715-159.

In honor of Coach Roebuck's huge impact at the University of North Dakota and lifetime of commitment to basketball, Donn Hartford, '60, has led the charge along with his friends and former student-athletes to establish a scholarship endowment in Coach Roebuck’s name. The scholarship or scholarships will support tuition and fees for UND women's basketball student-athletes.
